Thank you for this important interview. As a clinical psychologist who has practiced since 1977 I have been outraged that over the past 4 decades more and more children and adults have been diagnosed with ADHD and medicated by physicians who have not done thorough evaluations. Both children and adults have concurred that "something's wrong" with their brains. I appreciate your and Dr. Born's acknowledgement of influence of lifestyle factors (diet/nourishment, exercise, environmental factors). However, there was no acknowledgement of the significant influence of psychological dynamics contributing to out of control behavior. Virtually all of my clients medicated for behavioral and psychiatric issues had a history of abuse, abandonment, addiction and unresolved trauma which had not been identified by any primary care physician or specialist, most of whom had spent little time gathering factual information prior to prescribing medication or making behavioral recommendations. Increasing proclivity to diagnose and medicate with little professional attention to impact of resolution of underlying emotional issues on physical and emotional health is concerning.
