By JOHN LEAKE

On Saturday, May 6, 2023, the California state Reparations Task Force convened and also published a document titled Meeting Materials. Though most of the tome is patently ridiculous, it does contain an interesting section in Chapter 16 about California’s notorious eugenics program.

As is noted on page 2 of the Chapter:

In 2003, the Legislature, Governor Gray Davis, and Attorney General Bill Lockyer all issued formal apologies for the 1909-1979 eugenics sterilization program that forcibly sterilized patients in state hospitals and homes without true consent.

In the mid-20th century, many U.S. doctors, geneticists and judges supported forced sterilizations.

This program—and its lack of informed consent for medical procedures—is an example of why the residents of California should NOT place blind faith in their state officials when it comes to medical matters. Wikipedia provides a good basic entry about Eugenics in California—a legal program that resulted in the forcible sterilization of 20,000 Californians from 1909 to 1963. During the 1930s, the California eugenics program served as a model for the German eugenics program implemented by the Nazi Party.

Leading proponents of the program in California were:

  • David Starr Jordan: Founding president of Stanford University and chairman of the American Eugenics Commission, vice-president of the American Society for Social Hygiene, and vice-president of the Eugenics Education Society of London.

  • Charles Goethe: First chairman of the board of trustees for California State University, Sacramento and founder of the Eugenics Society of Northern California.

  • Ulysses Sigel Webb: Attorney General of California for 37 years, and enthusiastic promoter of the Californian forced sterilization laws.

And so we see that yesterday’s ELITE EXPERTS about social and medical matters turned out to have grossly overestimated their intellectual, scientific, and moral authority. Motivated by arrogance and hubris, these men implemented a scheme that most reasonable people now find appalling.
