Trans fats are super-saturated seed and vegetable oils that are used in fast food fryers and in packaged processed foods used as cohesives and long-lasting preservatives. These products came into widespread use in 1990 are are well known to raise the LDL-C or bad cholesterol. The American Heart Association called for legislative restrictions on trans fat back in 2009.
