All for the greater goods. UN, EU, WHO, OCJ was all setup for a collective rule of nations. Just a higher dimensjon of communisme..

What an astute observation by the philosopher. The "legitimate purpose" of the nation-state should be very narrow in scope. Reagan came close to this idea. Instead, we have an ever ballooning swamp of corruption and waste led by fools. This is a non sustainable disaster with no easy solutions. But surely the first step is to at least recognize the dire situation that we're in.

Allan Toole's avatar

Reagan championed the idea, but the national debt actually grew by over 186% during his term...

Goeff's avatar

I just heard that Reagan started the tax on Social Security. I don't know if that's true, but I wouldn't be surprised. But whatever, I'm no fan of the Ponzi scheme in any case.

Goeff's avatar

The only "legitimate purpose" of the nation state is to protect the interests of big money. If that's "legitimate" then the concept is meaningless to the rest of us.

Simple as it may sound, folks either choose Freedom and the American Constitutional Republic or they do not.

TRUMP clearly stands for prosperity, peace and we the American People, including respect for our Republic with honor. He represents millions who choose him as our Presidential representative and those that hate what he stands for, hate our Republic and we the people for choosing him.

I trust Trump to uphold the duties for the office of President of the U.S.A. He puts the U.S.A. first, second to The Creator, all mighty God

One Nation Under God with Liberty and Justice for all.

" American Constitutional Republic"

Gimmee a break. The "anti-Federalists" had a clue over 2 centuries ago.

Then there's this.:

"“The Constitution looked fairly good on paper, but it was not a popular document; people were suspicious of it, and suspicious of the enabling legislation that was being erected upon it. There was some ground for this. The Constitution had been laid down under unacceptable auspices; its history had been that of a coup d'état.

“It had been drafted, in the first place, by men representing special economic interests. Four-fifths of them were public creditors, one-third were land speculators, and one-fifth represented interests in shipping, manufacturing, and merchandising. Most of them were lawyers. Not one of them represented the interest of production — Vilescit origine tali. (the dice were loaded from the start)"

I kinda giggled applying Stockholm Syndrome to how people feel about their national government.

An important difference between them, and people who feel connected to their captors, is most “nationalists” believed a lie and don’t realize they’ve been captured!

Deceived is a better word for them. 🇺🇸

Men's Media Network's avatar

On the contrary. The “Nationalist” is the person who has finally distinguished country from government and chooses the former. By way of evidence, the “Nationalists” were always first in line to be violently purged when big government corruption metastasized into full blown communism. Russia, China, Vietnam, Korea, Venezuela. All of them. Every. Single. Time.

Goeff's avatar

In your list of countries you could just as well include the good old USSA. For proof, consider what happened to the truly "nationalist" groups under the clown dictators Wilson and FDR.

Exhibit A is the America First Committee.

"[W]hat is the legitimate purpose of the 21st century nation-state?"

Holding back world government -- IF we regain control of national governments. Because we surely won't *each* be able to do it from our 21st-century isolated, surveilled, poisoned-out, smoked-out little bunker micro-"states", guns or no guns.

Fair enough. Just recognize you'll have to endow it with a Bitcoin-strength structural resilience and procedural genius so that it's not slaughtered in its infancy. Everyone knows that in the modern era, every protest group from the Tea Party to Occupy is eventually co-opted and/or snuffed out.

I will not be watching, John. I suspect a clusterfuck by ABC.

As to the federal government , it has become a parasite on the citizens hard earned money and it's insatiable need to give it away to favorite causes and nations.

It no longer serves it's people. It serves itself to the detriment of the citizens.

MacIntyre is a genius. What a great quote. So simple. So true. Here in Australia, war and its 'sacrifices' (note the pseudo-religious terminology) are glorified in our national War Memorial and in two annual days of remembrance dating from the First World War - ANZAC Day (commemorating the Gasllipoli disaster) and Armistice Day (commemorating the end of the war in Europe). Australian boys enlisted in their thousands, inspired by patriotism and a complete ignorance of war. They were then sent to be slaughtered by machine guns at Gallipoli and in the trenches in France. A large portion of an entire generation was wiped out, while the architects of the catastrophe sat safely at home. The propaganda machine of the 'telephone company' then went into action to convince subsequent generations that all these lives were 'sacrificied' for a noble cause.
