I'll bet it wasn't that way for WWII, nor for the Korean War but for the Vietnam War..., my guess is that with all the protests and social turmoil that war created that somebody had to devise a way to defuse at least some of the anxiety that 18 year old men faced back then.

War and the training for it probably brings out a lot of the worst behaviors. When people have to think about their children being put into war situations, they might not be as gung ho about going to war. I am anti war period.
