Blaze Media recently produced a documentary about the incineration of Lahaina, Maui on August 8, 2023. The producer contacted me in September to hear my take on it, and our conversation turned into an interview for the documentary. John's initial reporting and interviews did a really good job covering this tragedy.
Land grabs are are not the reason this happened. It's a result of what happened, just like anywhere that becomes "economically depressed" and therefore a good opportunity to "buy low".
The causes are most likely due to age-old reasons, such as bureaucracy, "it can't happend to us" mentality, political incompetence/intransigence, reaction instead of proaction, and general human failings. No wild reasoning is needed to explain things.
Truly sad, and not unique or all that extraordinary. Far worse happens all around the world quite often, outside of our normal view.
