As a grandparent who raised(and still am as Josh is now 28) a child with autism, I can tell you that the new autism Barbie doll is a blatant offense to many of those in the autism community and I'll tell you why.
The doll is an attempt to neutralize the massive autism epidemic thereby making it it acceptable to the larger community. It's like saying that it's just fine if one has autism and everyone needs to accept the fact that they just have some quirky behaviors. No, it's not fine to have 1 in 31 children and young adults with autism in the U.S(1 in 12 boys in California). It's an epidemic that we must stop and it should have ended back in 1986.
Many of those with autism suffer from seizures, at least 30% or more are non-verbal. It is a neurological illness that affects the microbiome and the brain. How will your company represent this in a doll with a few little quirks?
Fortunately, RFK,Jr. is making great strides in the HHS to end this terrible epidemic. We must end those with autism who all have suffered from encephalopathy and heal them now.
Shame on Mattel for taking advantage of such a serious health issue and attempting to make autism(which is not genetic) an acceptable disability. It would seem that making money trumps the real issue and the truth here.
That doll is not anywhere NEAR representative of any autistic or other child harmed by vaccines or any other toxin. She still looks like a sex object. Her headphones are typical of most people these days who are buried in their own little electronic worlds. And the whole look makes her look no different from any other person. Making a toy out of a serious life condition demeans that condition and normalizes it so that children grow up thinking being sick is a normal thing. We want to avoid letting kids get harmed. Not glorify it if they do become harmed. Not make them look like any other normal kid. This doll doesn’t come anywhere near helping an unharmed child relate to an autistic child.
