Obvious Questions:

John, it could be argued that the war with Iran has been going on for many years, if you consider that their government has long been a worldwide state supporter of terrorism. The western world has been targeted in this cowardly way for decades. The Iranian people have been living under this repressive regime since 1979. I know an Iranian American who still has family in Iran, and they support the US efforts to free them.
While I'm disappointed that we are in this war, I wanted to take up John's implicit challenge of justifying the war but can't quite come up with one. Your thinking comes close to mine. I think ISRAEL has justification for all the attacks and threats it has received over the years by proxies of Iran. But even with the many Americans dead at the hands of Iran and its' proxies from past wars I'm not sure there is justification for our war on Iran. But, when does the world come to 'enough is enough'? I believe it's factually true that they've been fomenting unrest and waging acts of terrorism for decades, right? Both the Second Israeli War, which is what Trump's assault on Iran is (the First being Bush's attack on Iraq in '03) , and the Russo-Ukrainian War, which we started in 2014 when the CIA instigated a coup de etat of a duly elected government in Kiev and replaced it with Western toddies, are completely unnecessary and do not in any way fill the just war philosophy you mention. No good will come from these new wars and indeed, the Israelis and their neocon allies in D.C. are transmogrifying them into one war.
So, we find ourselves fighting Russia, a Western country who should be allied with us or at least neutral, and who have at least 10k nukes of various types, including hypersonic missiles which are too fast to shoot down, and Iran, a large country with over 90,000,000 people, supported by China, N Korea, and Russia (because of our war mongers), plus has massive amounts of oil and a very strategic and almost impossible geography for attackers. Meantime, China continues to infiltrate and attack us in non-kinetic ways, based on their May 2019 Declaration of a Peoples' War against us, and a Muslim invasion and colonization of the U.S., with only parts of the U.S. seeing these as the metaphysical threat to our survival as a republic that they present.
John is right about these wars. And who decides which wars to fight makes them problematic as they bring their own prejudices and human frailties to the process of picking which war is good, which is bad.
