I just finished listening to your book with Dr McCullough. Excellent! I recommend all, reading this post, access the book. I went the audible way, however, I may pick it up the hard copy to have a bookshelf reference copy.
Yikes! Sounds like Edward Jenner was very charismatic! I can't imagine someone allowing their 8 year old son to be used in such an experiment,... and townspeople lining up to have another rub his/her infected arm on them.... OMG!!! Yes, I know people do this sort of thing, even today. I just don't understand. Thankfully, other critical minds continued research and discovery. Thank you, John, for the story! It was generally interesting, and also interesting how so many people were "charmed" by Edward Jenner. Well, I suppose it was progress....

Made me recall that Lewis and Clark had a cowpox vaccine when they started, but it spoiled before they could ever use it to inoculate Indians as Jefferson had instructed Lewis.
