But to infer that there is no adequate basis in US interest, to ignore the fact that it was part of a global strategy that included actions that had nothing to do with Israel, and to argue that there is simply no other explanation, so that it is prima facie proof that Trump did it only because it's in Israel's interest, is a disingenuous argument, to say the least. I think what Tucker has been saying all along and is TRUE is that Trump has betrayed us because he said America First and he has fallen so short of his promises - where is justice for COVID and the crimes against humanity (I was a hospital physician and saw this first hand and left my practice of 20 years because I was the only one to speak out and was told everyone was against me), what about Epstein, what about the American families struggling? Gas/food prices are all higher now with war. Our debt is out of control. Was at U of MN hospital ED with my dad end of May and have never seen an ED despite 20 years of hospital medicine like that - patients lining the halls, bathrooms with feces smeared all over them - my dad needed a bed, a chest tube, and many consultants but sat in ED for 3 days because no beds. There was no chairs and they didn’t answer calls for over 30 minutes. We got problems at home - we gotta fix them and stop with injecting ourselves and the American money and souls into the Middle East. Also have to stop giving other countries like Israel money. I understand and share the frustration with the lack of progress compared to what we all expected. But it's a complex and difficult task that Trump has undertaken, not least because of extremely strong and desperate opposition and a press that is complicit in the destruction of our society and the frustration of any attempts at real progress. I certainly disagree with some things he's done, and he is often his own worst enemy through his words and actions. But I think the general picture is of someone trying to do what he was elected to do, for the most part. "Betrayal" is a strong accusation, and I think it is a gross overreach.
As for America First, you have to consider second-order effects to determine what is truly America First. Iran was (and to a great extent still is) a real problem for America—one that was on track to get worse, not better. Presidents for decades have kicked the can down the road, and Trump is the first one to make a real play at solving the problem. The enemy gets a vote, as the saying goes, and we're in a difficult spot, especially because the midterms are constraining him from hanging tough and forcing their hand completely.
You can argue that he should not have done it. It was risky, to be sure, and lots of people have lost their lives. But I don't agree that it betrayed America First. If we ignore second- and third-order effects, our "America First" efforts will make things worse, not better. As Jesus said, we must be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. That's much easier said than done, but it's a worthy objective IMO.

I worked during covid trying to keep patients alive that should have never needed hospital care, had they received the proper treatment (FLCCC and other protocols using ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, etc) initially. There are people who say that. If you haven't already, I suggest you look into what they've been up to in the region there for a couple decades at least. It's an imperialistic violent interference in the governments of several Nations. Everywhere they've operated, they've produced instability, societal destruction, and great harm. Having a nuclear weapon, as well as advanced missile capabilities and other weapons will greatly enhance their ability to continue to do what they've been doing. There's a reason that virtually all of the countries in the region have supported the US action even though it's caused them harm and put them in danger. I started out in this thread denying the "Israel first" accusation. I stand by that, but this discussion has expanded from there, and I'm not saying I know how things will turn out. I trembled when I heard that we had attacked Iran. Then it seemed that perhaps it was going to work out. And now we're in a very sticky situation, the outcome of which is anyone's guess. I've had many discussions with Iranians. What I've gleaned is that Jews and Muslims get along pretty well in Iran. Cities there have council members, as our cities do. Both Jews and Muslims sit on those councils. From the Iranian viewpoint, the problem with Israel is Zionism, that is, the political and literal expansion of Israel. We see this in Gaza; everything that played out was to expand the region for Israel. The excuses used by Netanyahu were to get rid of Hamas, which is true, but more importantly, Netenyaho wanted Gaza under control by Israel. Netenyaho is doing the same in southern Lebanon. The excuse again is cleaning out Hezbollah, but in reality it is to expand Israeli territory. Netenyaho has said Israel will act as in the days of King Saul to exterminate Iran, using the account of Samuel, a prophet, telling King Saul to destroy the Amalekites, even their children and domestic animals. Sounds like Gaza, right? The Iranians see Israel in a manifest destiny mode, and indeed this is what Zionism is about. Most people think this is all religious, but it's more a land grab. Israel has nukes and wants more territory. So what does Iran do to counter Israeli aggression? This is why Iran is telling Trump that development of nuclear capacity is off the table. Iran needs to have a buffer against the Israelis. Of course you won't hear this from any news media; Netanyahu is using Trump and the US military to achieve his goals of Zionism. No leader of any nation has entered the Situation Room, except Netenyaho. Iran sees what is happening and I believe they are using Hormuz as a hostage. Further lying when confronted with video evidence of past words now claiming he never said. Truly delusional. Not sure what his true agenda is but it’s not as simple as war is evil. Same here. I thought very highly of Tucker and found his insights on-target and valuable. I've seen him try to retcon his problematic statements over the past year, as you noted. But he also has done some podcasts where he distorts a story with selective arguments and deceptions that seem deliberate. He and Candace (to name the top two) have fractured the coalition that was the best chance we've had in decades to defeat or severely weaken the forces that are unraveling our society and destroying the last vestige of a republican order.
Charlie's murder was a blow like none the conservative cause has seen in my memory. At his memorial service, it seemed that we would improve the moment and make something even better from the ashes. It was at that precise moment that Tucker, Candace, and others launched a full-fledged attack on the coalition from within. If I were a Democrat, I could not have wished for anything better for my cause, nor would I believe that the coalition would ever do that to itself. Tucker is front and center in that, and if the Dems win the midterms and succeed in doing to Trump 2.0 what they did to Trump 1.0, Tucker will be in my mind the one man most responsible for that outcome.

I didn't say anything about a republic versus an empire. The definition of a republic is generally understood in contradistinction to a pure democracy. The salient characteristic of a republic is that the rights of all people are protected by a constitution so that even a great majority cannot violate the rights of individuals that are guaranteed by the constitution.
Rome famously went from being a republic to being an empire, but it does not follow from that that the meaning of "republic" is "not an empire." In point of fact, Rome was a poor example of a republic, and historians have argued with some justice that it's better understood as an oligarchy, transitioning to a junta-based military dictatorship in its empire stage.
I don't disagree that America is and has been for some time an empire. Nor am I particularly happy about that fact. But we have to deal with the world as it exists now and not as I wish it existed—for example, if American foreign policy had not been so colossally bad since World War II and if the Islamists had not hijacked the Iranian revolution and turned it to such ill effect within their country and throughout the region.
America is seeking stability, and Iran is seeking instability, each on their own terms. Each nation is acting in its own interest, not altruistically and not in a way that any moral person would approve of with respect to the behavior of an individual. But nations are not individuals. The world has always been this way, and no one has ever had the faintest idea how to make it otherwise. Our task is to do the best we can within the context of that reality.
Fair enough. But the U.S. republic as conceived in the Constitution is antithetical to almost everything America has become, domestically as well as abroad in the world. The idea of "recovering our republic" covers a wide field. I'd be happy to find a way to strict isolationism, and there was a time when I favored it. But when I envision that in the context of the world as I perceive it now, I can't see how it would not make things even worse than they are now, for us as well as the rest of the world.
But recovering the domestic aspect of being a republic has no downside that I can see. Simplistically, I'll say that entails the government leaving everyone the Hell alone. In the late 60's, my Armenian parents emigrated from Iran to the US. I was born and raised in the States, and am so grateful they made that move. Gas/food prices are all higher now with war. Our debt is out of control. There was no chairs and they didn’t answer calls for over 30 minutes. I understand and share the frustration with the lack of progress compared to what we all expected. But it's a complex and difficult task that Trump has undertaken, not least because of extremely strong and desperate opposition and a press that is complicit in the destruction of our society and the frustration of any attempts at real progress. I certainly disagree with some things he's done, and he is often his own worst enemy through his words and actions. But I think the general picture is of someone trying to do what he was elected to do, for the most part. "Betrayal" is a strong accusation, and I think it is a gross overreach.
As for America First, you have to consider second-order effects to determine what is truly America First. Iran was (and to a great extent still is) a real problem for America—one that was on track to get worse, not better. Presidents for decades have kicked the can down the road, and Trump is the first one to make a real play at solving the problem. The enemy gets a vote, as the saying goes, and we're in a difficult spot, especially because the midterms are constraining him from hanging tough and forcing their hand completely.
You can argue that he should not have done it. It was risky, to be sure, and lots of people have lost their lives. But I don't agree that it betrayed America First. If we ignore second- and third-order effects, our "America First" efforts will make things worse, not better. As Jesus said, we must be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. I worked during covid trying to keep patients alive that should have never needed hospital care, had they received the proper treatment (FLCCC and other protocols using ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine, etc) initially. If you haven't already, I suggest you look into what they've been up to in the region there for a couple decades at least. It's an imperialistic violent interference in the governments of several Nations. Everywhere they've operated, they've produced instability, societal destruction, and great harm. Having a nuclear weapon, as well as advanced missile capabilities and other weapons will greatly enhance their ability to continue to do what they've been doing. I started out in this thread denying the "Israel first" accusation. I stand by that, but this discussion has expanded from there, and I'm not saying I know how things will turn out. I trembled when I heard that we had attacked Iran. Then it seemed that perhaps it was going to work out. And now we're in a very sticky situation, the outcome of which is anyone's guess. I've had many discussions with Iranians. What I've gleaned is that Jews and Muslims get along pretty well in Iran. Cities there have council members, as our cities do. We see this in Gaza; everything that played out was to expand the region for Israel. The excuse again is cleaning out Hezbollah, but in reality it is to expand Israeli territory. Netenyaho has said Israel will act as in the days of King Saul to exterminate Iran, using the account of Samuel, a prophet, telling King Saul to destroy the Amalekites, even their children and domestic animals. Sounds like Gaza, right? The Iranians see Israel in a manifest destiny mode, and indeed this is what Zionism is about. Most people think this is all religious, but it's more a land grab. Israel has nukes and wants more territory. So what does Iran do to counter Israeli aggression? This is why Iran is telling Trump that development of nuclear capacity is off the table. Iran needs to have a buffer against the Israelis. Of course you won't hear this from any news media; Netanyahu is using Trump and the US military to achieve his goals of Zionism. I was a former listener & supporter of Tucker Carlson for years. He’s changed & has been caught in many lies. Further lying when confronted with video evidence of past words now claiming he never said. Truly delusional. Not sure what his true agenda is but it’s not as simple as war is evil. Now I see him only as an unhinged liar.
Same here. I thought very highly of Tucker and found his insights on-target and valuable. I've seen him try to retcon his problematic statements over the past year, as you noted. But he also has done some podcasts where he distorts a story with selective arguments and deceptions that seem deliberate. He and Candace (to name the top two) have fractured the coalition that was the best chance we've had in decades to defeat or severely weaken the forces that are unraveling our society and destroying the last vestige of a republican order.
Charlie's murder was a blow like none the conservative cause has seen in my memory. At his memorial service, it seemed that we would improve the moment and make something even better from the ashes. It was at that precise moment that Tucker, Candace, and others launched a full-fledged attack on the coalition from within. If I were a Democrat, I could not have wished for anything better for my cause, nor would I believe that the coalition would ever do that to itself. Tucker is front and center in that, and if the Dems win the midterms and succeed in doing to Trump 2.0 what they did to Trump 1.0, Tucker will be in my mind the one man most responsible for that outcome.

I didn't say anything about a republic versus an empire. The definition of a republic is generally understood in contradistinction to a pure democracy. The salient characteristic of a republic is that the rights of all people are protected by a constitution so that even a great majority cannot violate the rights of individuals that are guaranteed by the constitution.
Rome famously went from being a republic to being an empire, but it does not follow from that that the meaning of "republic" is "not an empire." In point of fact, Rome was a poor example of a republic, and historians have argued with some justice that it's better understood as an oligarchy, transitioning to a junta-based military dictatorship in its empire stage.
I don't disagree that America is and has been for some time an empire. Nor am I particularly happy about that fact. But we have to deal with the world as it exists now and not as I wish it existed—for example, if American foreign policy had not been so colossally bad since World War II and if the Islamists had not hijacked the Iranian revolution and turned it to such ill effect within their country and throughout the region.
America is seeking stability, and Iran is seeking instability, each on their own terms. Each nation is acting in its own interest, not altruistically and not in a way that any moral person would approve of with respect to the behavior of an individual. But nations are not individuals. The world has always been this way, and no one has ever had the faintest idea how to make it otherwise. Our task is to do the best we can within the context of that reality.

But when I envision that in the context of the world as I perceive it now, I can't see how it would not make things even worse than they are now, for us as well as the rest of the world.
But recovering the domestic aspect of being a republic has no downside that I can see. Simplistically, I'll say that entails the government leaving everyone the Hell alone. Trump has many flaws, but he is aiming and moving haltingly in that direction, while the opposition is doubling down on the opposite trajectory.

In the late 60's, my Armenian parents emigrated from Iran to the US. I was born and raised in the States, and am so grateful they made that move. For a brief couple of years, though, in the mid-70's, we went back to Tehran because my dad thought things might improve. They didn't, obviously. We got out by the skin of our teeth.

Absent a draft, foreign wars are removed from the public daily experience. Taxes are collected and wasted on countless projects, so the payment side is a given whether war is waged or not. The return of taxes in the form of payments to corporations for war materiel or school systems for "education" are all into American salaries, so the recycling of currency is fairly constant no matter the end.
