Dear John, much as I appreciate your writing on practically any other subject, when it comes to Russia and Ukraine you demonstrate curious blindness which, alas, I often see in people whose country never experienced an actual aggression, with foreign ghouls coming with arms, looting, raping, burning and mass murdering your people - ironically quite some British people seem unable to understand the very basic fact of ghoulishness of an armed aggressor. So, when writing on this subject, you are really close, alas, to Mr Putin's (a proven ghoul) propaganda flunkeys who ignore one simple fact - NO ONE was talking about war preparations, strengthening defense, etc, BEFORE Feb 24, 2022 when the Russian ghouls invaded Ukraine and started mass murder there. Ukraine, due to its sheer numbers and the dire state of its economy, was never ever any military threat to Russia. As simple as that. As for any war, we know very well that Russia is unable to break through Ukrainian army and in the case it decides to invade would probably be easily defeated by the Albanian Army, let alone the Polish one. As for possible Western aggression in order to grab the proverbial "Russian resources", who on earth needs that when Mr Putin will provide any at bargain basement prices, using his own population as slave labour just as he uses them as his unlimited supply of cannon fodder that Russia through the ages have been so famous for? I also remember Biden saying Putin will invade, and then they invaded. If anything, Europe and NATO are incompetent and did nothing to stop the invasion. The whole purpose of NATO was to counter Russian aggression. In that area, they failed miserably. No wonder Trump is threatening to leave NATO. They are helpless without the US military and money. I was born in 1962. I lived in a world where the old boys kept quiet about the Great War and the middle-aged men only talked about the good bits of the 2nd war. Nobody really talked about the death and destruction - one man told me no former soldier would discuss the horror of war with someone who hadn't been there. My father worried about the "Reds under the Bed". We all watched heroic films about the 2nd war. We knew "it won't happen again" because of nuclear bombs and because "Europe had finally learnt its lesson".
Well, 80-odd years from the last fuss and over 100 years from the previous one, nobody is left to remember that we had learnt our lesson.
