We do have to remember that this did not start in 2021 or when Russia started its "special military operation."
It started in 2014 when the West instigated a color revolution with all its devious methods to overthrow the government of Ukraine and install puppets to rule the territory the West wanted to exploit for its trillions of dollars in vast mineral, rare earth metals, agriculture and whatever else it could plunder.
However evil one believes Russia is, it is its own nation with its own people and it has the largest nuclear arsenal in Europe by very, very far.
The earlier agreements in he 1990s was that the West/NATO would NOT expand toward Russia to threaten its borders and NATO did exactly the opposite, to piss off Russia every step of the way, and NATO was warned not to try to make Ukraine a NATO member, but they let on, that they did wish to do that.
How would the U.S. like Mexico armed with vast numbers of nuclear weapons aimed at Texas? Or Cuba? Don't we remember our history with JFK and blockade of Cuba and the Soviets?
The toppling of the Ukrainian govt in 2014 brought on Civil War in Ukraine. Why can't people understand that is what was going on? Civil War between Western Ukraine (aka NATO/the "West") that wanted the wealth of the Eastern Donbas region provinces where mostly Russian speaking people lived there.

To get to the point, and offer a historical hypothesis on what's happening, let's suppose, for example, that Putin was completely subservient to globalist power at least until 2021, completely in the sense that he hadn't expressed any dissent within that circle and was continuing his position as a puppet suspended by strings pulled by others.
To demonstrate that he was a docile puppet, perhaps it would be enough to actually accept the pandemic, to abstain from revealing the American and Israeli games regarding Operation Warp Speed, to have manufactured his own mRNA vaccines, to have promoted them in Russia, to have recommended the vaccines to his citizens, effectively sharing the mechanism for generating a toxic protein in the body through the Russian vaccine.
(And who knows if it's the only one our bodies produce under the influence of vaccines).
Further demonstrating Putin's fundamental acceptance of globalist agendas, it's worth noting that even the crushing of the protests in Donbass in 2014, the famous Maidan, resulted in almost no Russian intervention, except to supply and arm, but insufficiently, the Russian-speaking protesters.
Then there's the development of state-controlled cryptocurrencies. From the way digital currency is developing in Russia, it always seems to have been a project, as is the case in NATO countries. They're looking for a way to force everyone, under penalty of going broke, to follow the state's instructions, which will gradually become laws of elected parliaments.
Let's assume that Putin, who became first prime minister and then president after Yeltsin's attempted sale of all Russian resources through a large band of oligarchs and with the interested amusement of America—well, Putin, taken by his pride in having brought Russia back to being a nation, of having been the best puppet in the hands of the Russian military hierarchy in the sense that he even surpassed it—let's assume that, faced with the globalists' request to make Russian resources available in any way, even by interrupting them, he, realizing that his position as Tsar was now coming to an end, attempted to assume a position of partial opposition, or perhaps demanding a higher command post since he was in fact once again selling off the country with the most resources in the world, created problems within the globalist power,
see for example his participation in Davos, first always in person and then finally ONLINE and with the attitude, if not of an expert, then at least of a model student of Davos and towards the figures in charge of the various summits. Davos seemed to be adopting the same political language as Klaus Shwab. He always demonstrated diligence and a clear understanding of the objectives to be achieved, knowing full well that everything would be decided behind the scenes at those summits.
Receiving a refusal, right behind the scenes, or a call to order, and fearing that he would lose his reputation as a modern Tsar before the Russians, or no longer being able to guarantee the various oligarchs or the Russian military's continued power, he merely proposed a few changes to the globalist agenda, while effectively continuing its main strategies.
I believe he attempted a more globalist approach for himself, but the globalists and their NATO pawn denied him this and immediately accelerated the strategies already in place to ensure Russia's compliance with globalist agendas.
That is, while they realized that Russia was raising the price, they accelerated financing for Ukrainian armaments and increased the threat to the Tsar.
It's clear to me that no head of state in the world, not even Xi Jinping, much less Putin, is completely opposed to globalist agendas.
What's happening are variations on the theme, diversifications that essentially maintain the same objectives of destroying masses of people, infrastructure, and resources. All of this is also a perfect diversion.
